Around 1:45 am on Wednesday morning I woke to an ear
piercing sound that filled our apartment.
A moment later I realized it was the fire alarm.  I jumped out of bed and headed to the
closet for some clothes to put on over my pajamas.  As I am doing this Josh sits up and says, “just get back in
bed…” I don’t think he had quite registered what was going on.  We looked out our window for a few
minutes to see if we see other residents gathering outside or if the fire
trucks were barreling down Othello.
We saw neither but the sound of the fire alarm alone was making me feel
sick enough to head outside.  (On
the inside of each apartment there is a little “speaker” by the door meaning I
am not exaggerating when I say it is ear piercingly loud!).  When we got outside there was a ton
residents- we wondered it they all made it outside as soon as we stepped away
from the window.  A few minutes
later two fire trucks pull up and we wait for the all clear.  As we stand there, most all of us in
our pajamas with bed head, Josh leans over to me and says, “I feel like I am
back in college.”  While I cant
remember experiencing an early morning fire alarm in the dorms- Josh certainly
can.
I have had many moments out here in Seattle where I have a
flashback memory of college.  I
feel like when you are far from home and everyone/thing that you know memories
occur more often.  Here are few
classic college flashbacks…
We got a really bad snowstorm on a Thursday- the same night
as Cru.  I was living in the
Bungalow with four other ladies a few miles from campus.  Despite the snow, Cru was still going
to meet so we had a decision to make- the verdict…trudging through the snow
would be easier and safer than driving.
So we threw on our snow gear and called our friend Betsy to say we would
“pick her up” at the end of her street.
I think we even helped push a car out of the ditch on the way!   It was still snowing when we came
out of Cru and it was one of the most fun walks home as we pushed each other in
the snow.
I loved my room in the Bungalow and how it had room for my
bed, a futon, desk and dresser.  I
remember plugging in my white Christmas lights above the futon that gave the
room a warm glow.  I put in the
movie “Big Fish” and sat on my steal of a deal IKEA rug to work on building
muscles.  I was in Life Drawing and
we each had half of a skeleton figurine.
We also received red clay and we were to learn the muscles of the body
by building and shaping them on our skeleton.  That night I enjoyed the pleasure of being an art
student.
The Bungalow had a carport on the side by my bedroom
window.  One night we all decided
was a good night to sit on the roof.
So we made peep s’mores, grabbed the latter and headed up.  We enjoyed our gooey treat while
secretly observing the late night partiers that couldn’t find their party since
they were yelling…”Where’s the par-tay!?!”
Megan and I were in Sculpture II together…which is a story
in and of itself!  But toward the
end of the year our prof. wanted us to help do a mass clean out.  The sculpture lab seemed to acquire a
lot of junk and so a lot of it was getting pitched.  Megan and I figured if its getting thrown out might as well
take what we want!  While we found
many treasures one was a 6 ft paper mache’ panther.  It was never painted so it was still the color of the brown
paper, but it was in a pouncing position.
We both thought there has to be something good for this!  We decided the best spot for it would
be in the Karen’s closet, propped just so, so that when she opened the door it
would fall out on her.  With the
help of Bethany we got him situated then the three of us sat in the living room
waiting for Karen to come home.
She walked in, we said out greetings, she made her way to her room, we
waited quietly…then yes…a loud scream and thus began the pranking of short
sheeting, underwear switching, giant cardboard sponge-bob displaying and more…
There were many nights of “band practice” (aka band hero)
when HW should have been getting done.
It was our senior year second semester and the Bungalow
ladies plus Betsy got back to school early.  We had a few days before classes actually started meaning we
had nothing to do and no obligations- bliss!  We ended up watching “Step Up 2” and like what happens to
most people watching dance movies- a dance party ensued after.  We were set on being the best hip hop
dancers in Menomonie that we even created our own dance video called “Tripp
Upp”…that night was awesome! (I was trying to attach the video with it- but can't get it to work...hopefully I can figure it out)
College was fun, challenging and growing but most of all it
is where I met some of my most treasured friends!  Seriously ladies, you are severely missed.
